Chimonobambusa quadrangularis

Chimonobambusa quadrangularis

A collectors’ plant, especially suitable for a large woodland garden.

It will grow in sun but seems best adapted to a moist shady site.

Its hardiness in northern gardens is questionable and may be dependent upon the degree of shelter provided by surrounding trees and shrubs. It has been variously recorded as tolerating -5C to -15C.

Under favourable conditions it is vigorously spreading and produces plentiful well spaced, upright culms, around 10 or 12 ft. in height (4m).

Mature culms are often square in section near the base and rather sharp adventitious roots are likely to appear at the nodes.

It does not seem well suited to being grown in containers but produces a most attractive combination when planted below trees or tall shrubs.
