Chimonobambusa
tumidissinoda
“Walking Stick Bamboo”
(Syn. Qiongzhuea tumidinoda)
Native to China where its very decorative stems were once converted into walking sticks.
Introduced to the UK in 1987.
Highly attractive feathery foliage with leaves up to 10cm long.
Well worth growing for its unique appearance and decorative effect providing its spread is contained.
The culms
are initially dark green and have exceptionally prominent nodes.
This is an interesting collectors’ plant suitable for
milder areas. Believed to have tolerated -13C. Snow may possibly do more
damage to the foliage than frost.
On favourable sites it is one of the most vigorously spreading bamboos in
cultivation but it is surprisingly slow to propagate in pots and
therefore rather scarce.
Can be grown in containers.
Best in light shade.
Limited availability.
