Indocalamus hamadea

Indocalamus hamadae
(syn. Indocalamus tessellatus f. hamadae)

Exceptionally large leaves - 60cm. long by 10cm wide is possible - probably the largest leaf of any bamboo hardy in the UK.

Slow to gain any height but can eventually reach 16ft.(5m)

A very distinctive specimen plant providing a lush tropical appearance.

On the nursery a plant growing in the shade of Magnolia and other tall shrubs on heavy soil has reached only 1.5m. with most culms  about 60cm covering 3m.in ten years. However plants in  Norfolk in more favourable conditions of sandy soil and a sheltered site have produced impressive upright culms of 2/3m with very large leaves, ideal for a tropical effect.

Has tolerated -20C.

Has the potential to spread but is  slow growing in comparison to other species of Sasa and Indocalamus.

Limited availability. (open ground clumps only at present)
