Pseudosasa japonica

.

Pseudosasa japonica ' Tsutsumiana'

("Onion Bamboo")

Very similar in appearance to the type  and can be used in exactly the same ways but distinguished by the fact that the internodes on larger
culms are expanded into a bottle shape. This effect is unfortunately sometimes rather hidden by culm sheaths.

Mainly a collectors' plant but its slightly shorter growth habit and multitude of stems can be a useful feature where an expanding, low bush or groundcover is needed.

Average height 3m.

Suitable for sun or light shade.

Has tolerated -24C.

Well suited to containers.

Can form a very unusual and distinctive specimen plant if selectively pruned to display the expanded internodes.
