Semiarundinaria fastuosa
An exceptionally impressive bamboo with substantial, upright, straight stems clustered with short branches, giving a neat, columnar appearance.
Culms are initially green, becoming purple or brown with age.
Normally spreads slowly, eventually forming a broad clump or a small to medium sized grove. Spread in 10years 1-3m.
Very striking as a specimen plant and highly effective as a tall screen. Its spread can be readily controlled by means of occasional spade work or rhizome barrier.
Very hardy and tolerant of a wide range of soils.
Has tolerated -25C.
Ideal for a tall screen of 18ft. or more (6/10m).
Slow to propagate and consequently sometimes in short supply.
RHS. Award.
