Shibataea kumasasa

Shibataea kumasasa
( also listed as Shibataea kumasaca and Sasa ruscifolia )

A very distinctive dwarf bamboo, usually less than 3ft.(1m) but capable of 2m.

Introduced from Japan in 1861.

The leaves open green and age to yellow-green.

Forms a steadily extending clump, but capable of being controlled, even in a small garden.

Suitable for sun or light shade.

The foliage is usually scorched during winter but light pruning  in spring together with thinning some of the older culms will allow new leaves to take over.

A sheltered, moist site and  acidic soil is preferable.

Has tolerated -25C.

A very useful specimen plant or groundcover.
